Course Overview

Our IUD Insertion course is a mixed-method program with online learning and face-to-face clinical components. The training delivers the theoretical and clinical knowledge necessary to become a competent IUD inserter.

This course is suited to experienced GPs, NPs and EMs who have a desire to provide IUD insertions for their patients and have at least 10 patients per year who require IUD insertion.

As IUD insertion is at the highest skill end of primary care contraceptive health practice, course participants are required to be at an appropriate level of experience to participate, including experience in contraceptive counselling, speculum and bimanual pelvic examination skills.

Before applying for this course, you should check:

  • You have support from your practice manager/practice owner. Please consider that equipment may need to be purchased such as an adjustable examination bed, preferably with stirrups (or a specialised positioning pad), and instruments. A nurse to assist with all IUD insertions is essential.
  • You are covered for IUD insertions with your medical indemnity company.

Course Content

Sexual Health Victoria's IUD insertion course consists of:

  • Online theory component (approx. 6 hours) which includes:
  • Video presentations
  • Videos of IUD consultations and insertions
  • Interactive quizzes
  • Online assessment of knowledge (approx.1 hour)
  • IUD insertion clinical placements to attain IUD insertion competency
  • Online evaluation and reinforcing activity

Clinical Placements are available our Box Hill clinic. You can start the online modules at any time but please note we generally have a 1-month wait for clinical placements. You must complete all online modules and assessments before booking and attending placements.
All course participants completing any of their clinical placements at SHV must obtain a Working with Children check. This must be processed and passed before placement can commence, which can take over a week.

The online modules should be completed within 3 months of registering for the course, and the clinical training sessions should be booked within the following 3 months.  We expect that the course is completed within 6 months, but completion within 12 months is the maximum allowed.

Eligibility

Medical Practitioners: This course is primarily for GPs who have completed their GP training and have established their practice. GPs who are considering moving practice are advised to delay training until they are established in a clinic that can support IUD insertions.

GPs in training, including GP registrars and those working towards fellowship who will complete in the next 6 months are welcome to apply directly via the booking link. If you are earlier in your training, please contact us directly at [email protected] to discuss your circumstances.
GPs who have many years of experience working in Australia and do not have their fellowship should also contact us directly to discuss their specific circumstances.

We understand Nurse Practitioners have a unique Scope of Practice. Nurse Practitioners who wish to become IUD inserters should contact us at [email protected] to register interest.

Endorsed Midwives may be eligible. Endorsed Midwives who wish to become IUD inserters should contact us at [email protected] to register interest.

We are not currently accepting interstate applicants.

Evidence of current national registration through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency will be required as part of the registration process.

To attend clinical placements doctors must be registered without any limitation, restriction or conditions that restrict practice at SHV clinical sites. Doctors with limited registration (for example limited to a specific clinic and/or supervisor) will need to apply to AHPRA Medical Board to request a change in circumstances for upskilling and CPD to practice at SHV clinical sites. Evidence of approval to practice at SHV clinical sites will need to be provided before placements can start. Please contact [email protected] before registering for the course to receive further information.

Applicants are required to confirm with their medical indemnity company that they will be covered for IUD insertions after completing the course.

It is a requirement that the clinic of an IUD inserter has resuscitation equipment (eg oxygen, bag and mask).

It is recommended that there are sufficient patients at your practice to insert at least 10 IUDs per year to maintain IUD insertion skills.  Course participants are required to be an Implanon NXT certified inserter and insert at least 10 per year.
