SHV parent / carer sessions are an important part of the everyBODY Education program. Engaging parents and carers is part of a whole school approach which is part of best practice RSE. SHV strongly recommend engaging students and the school community in sequential Relationships and Sexuality Education though out primary and secondary school. This is supported by The Victorian Department of Education Sexuality and Consent Education Policy.
It is recommended that parents and carers have opportunity to understand the content of any Relationships and Sexuality Education Program being delivered at their childs' school. These sessions are designed to build understanding of Sexual Health Victoria school programs and promote confident conversations at home.
60 minutes online or 90 minutes face to face
This session will detail the importance of comprehensive school-based Relationships and Sexuality Education and the role that parents and carers have in this. Expert SHV educators will allow opportunity to ask questions about the program and address common concerns that adults have.
• Be provided with opportunities to reflect on experiences with Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE)
• Review the international, national and state and local influences upon RSE within schools
• Reflect upon the importance of strong home-school-community partnerships
• Understand content of SHV everybody Education program
• Be provided with some practical suggestions for parents/carers to use when talking with their young person
90 minutes face to face or online
This session specifically addresses the likelihood of young people seeing or engaging with sexual content. Parents and carers will have opportunity to reflect on their own rules around technology. SHV will provide information around sexting, grooming and pornography. The school will have opportunity to explain relevant policies and practices around keeping young people safe online.
• Have opportunity to reflect on their own values and rules surrounding technology use at home.
• Compare values and rules of their child’s peers’ families
• Discuss likelihood of seeing pornography
• Explore ways of starting conversations about sexual content online
• Identify ways of discussing grooming with young people
• Examine laws around sexual content online.
• Examine laws around sexting
• Reflect on the school technology policy
• Review resources available
• Be provided with opportunities to reflect on experiences with Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE)
• Review the international, national and state and local influences upon RSE within schools
• Reflect upon the importance of strong home-school-community partnerships
