This course delivers the theoretical and clinical knowledge required for registered nurses and midwives to independently provide cervical screening services. Course content is based on the Australian National Cervical Screening Program and is accredited through Cancer Council Victoria.
The first two days of the course involve virtual classrooms using the platform Zoom. The virtual classrooms will include lectures, demonstrations, group work and role-plays.
The session on day three is a face-to-face session delivered at our Box Hill site and aims to provide a supportive environment to practically apply the theory from the course. The 45-minute session will involve the course participant undertaking a consultation and performing a speculum examination on a real-life person- a clinical teaching associate (a paid staff member of SHV) under the direct supervision and support of a SHV clinician.
Course participants have the option to complete this session within their own workplace (at a time of their choosing) with a workplace preceptor. It is expected that the preceptor can support the course participant to perform a cervical screening consultation and speculum examination with the opportunity for feedback to support learning.
There is approximately 3 hours of online learning which can be completed prior to the course start date (when access to the online learning platform becomes available) or after the course.
Course participants have access to two ½ day clinical placements at our clinic to support the development of clinical skills and competence.
