        Description

        Course Overview

        This intensive and comprehensive course for doctors and nurse practitioners provides training for excellence in delivering sexual and reproductive health in primary care.  The evening virtual workshop series course is equivalent to the 4-day online and face-to-face versions of the course run by SHV. 

        This course may be attended as theory only (accredited for 38 CPD hours). For those wishing to complete the full SRHA National Certificate please also register for the exam and clinical placement options (accredited for an additional 25 CPD hours).

        • Reproductive anatomy and physiology
        • Communicating about reproduction, sex and diversity
        • Primary care andrology
        • Primary care gynaecology
        • Fertility
        • Unintended pregnancy choices
        • Contraception
        • Sexually transmissible infections
        • Specific populations and circumstances
        • Option of a contraception mini-audit, with an easy to use template to record 5-10 contraception consultations, compare with best practice guidelines, and to identify areas for improvement. 

        Participants will be required to attend at least 5 of the 6 interactive evening virtual workshop sessions at the designated times. Due to course requirements, these sessions must be attended at the scheduled times and cannot be watched later. 

        In addition, participants will be required to complete 27 hours of self-paced online modules, to be completed between April and December 2026The online learning modules can be accessed up to 4 weeks before the first live virtual workshop date. 

        The evening virtual workshop series is scheduled over five months (May to September 2025). At least 5 of the 6 workshops must be attended, with the final two role play sessions particularly recommended to be attended live.

        4. 7-9pm AEST Wednesday 24 June 2026 STI cases and Q&A 

        5. 7-9pm AEST Wednesday 26 August 2026 Menopause cases and contraception role plays  

        6. 7-9pm AEST Wednesday 16 September 2026 Sexual health role plays, Q&A and wrap up  

        7. 7-9pm AEDWednesday 21 October 2026 Role play exam for those enrolled for this option *Vic daylight savings time applies 

        This course may be attended as theory only (accredited for 38 CPD hours), or for those wishing to complete the full SRHA National Certificate please also register for the exam and clinical placement options.  

        • Written exam:  Open-book format (short answer and multiple-choice questions). Role-play exam: Role-play case exam comprising a doctor/patient scenario on video link on Wednesday 21 October 7-9pm AEDT.  It is only necessary to register for the exam if you are intending to do the clinical placement component either at SHV or at another family planning organisation.         • Clinical placements: Minimum of 6 practical sessions at our Box Hill or city clinic (3.5 hours each). 

        It is possible to undertake clinical placements in another state. In this case, please pay the theory and exam fee to SHV, and contact the family planning organisation in your selected state to arrange your clinical placements. 
        Please note: fees and arrangements of other family planning organisations may vary from those of SHV and the availability of clinical placements may vary.

        Eligibility

        This course is open to doctors with a current AHPRA registration. Doctors without AHPRA registration may be eligible for the theory component.

        Nurse Practitioners are eligible to apply to complete this course. We understand Nurse Practitioners have a unique Scope of Practice, if you are unsure which course is best suited to meet your learning needs, please contact us.         To attend clinical placements doctors must be registered without any limitation, restriction or conditions that restrict practice at SHV clinical sites. Doctors with limited registration (for example limited to a specific clinic and/or supervisor) will need to apply to AHPRA Medical Board to request a change in circumstances for upskilling and CPD to practice at SHV clinical sites. Evidence of approval to practice at SHV clinical sites will need to be provided before placements can start. Please contact [email protected] before registering for the course to receive further information.  

        Outcomes

        The FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors is awarded to participants who successfully complete the theory, exam and clinical placements. To be awarded the FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health, the participant must pass all course requirements, including examinations and clinical competencies.
        Participants who choose to only complete the theory course receive an SHV Statement of Attendance and are eligible for 38 hours RACGP CPD hours.
