Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT) Train the Trainer Course

Course Overview

This course is for experienced Implanon NXT proceduralists who have experience in education to be credentialed to deliver Implanon NXT training to other health care professionals, in accordance with Implanon NXT Training Recommendations for Health Care Professionals.

This session is run in small groups (usually 3 participants). An experienced Implanon NXT trainer will provide information on conducting Implanon NXT theory and simulation training for health care professionals, including addressing frequently asked questions and providing feedback on Implanon NXT insertion and removal simulation. The course requires you to demonstrate your Implanon NXT insertion and removal technique and to provide feedback for a mock simulation training session.

The course includes SHV’s Contraception Implant (Implanon NXT) theory online modules and presentation notes.

Simulation equipment will be provided with reply paid postage included in course costs for those who don’t have access to the equipment through their workplace.

Course Content 

• Explain Implanon NXT theory to health care professionals using the product information and relevant clinical guidelines.  
• Demonstrate Implanon NXT insertion and removal on simulation equipment while describing each step.  
• Assess steps in Implanon NXT insertion and removal simulation and provide feedback for correct technique.  

Eligibility

AHPRA registration as a doctor, nurse practitioner, nurse, or midwife.

To be eligible for this course, and to become an Implanon NXT trainer please check if you meet all of the Recommended criteria, and some or most of the Desirable criteria listed below. You will be asked to confirm this during registration.

Recommended criteria for Trainers:

• Has completed training (both theory and simulation), on the insertion and removal of Implanon NXT
• Has clinical experience with the insertion and removal of Implanon NXT (≥10 insertions and ≥10 removals)
• Agrees to teach the standard Implanon NXT insertion and removal technique and comply with relevant applicable professional standards and the Implanon NXT product information
• Possesses current evidenced-based knowledge in contraception
• Agrees, at a minimum, to provide training that delivers the learning outcomes outlined in this document
• Agrees to include a theory component and allow time for discussion and questions
• Agrees to provide evidence of training (e.g., certificate) to HCPs who achieve the competencies outlined in this document

Desirable additional criteria for Trainers:

• Current clinical practice in etonogestrel implant insertions and removals and more broadly contraception in a clinical setting
• Current or recent past supervision of training in etonogestrel insertions and removals in a clinical setting
• Current or recent past clinical education experience
• Evidence of professional development and/or qualification in the field of reproductive and sexual health e.g., FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive & Sexual Health for Doctors or an accredited reproductive and sexual health course for nurses or midwives, depending on professional group

Outcomes

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance for Implanon NXT Train the Trainer course. The certificate may be used as evidence of attendance at training to provide to the manufacturer.

Accreditation

A certificate of attendance may be submitted to the manufacturer of Implanon NXT as evidence of credentialling as an Implanon NXT Trainer.
