Teaching Notes

This entertaining picture book explains in simple terms the most common way for a sperm and egg to join.

This can lead to discussion of other ways that a sperm and egg can join. Children conceived through Assisted Reproductive Technology should be acknowledged in discussion.

Procedure

  1. Introduce the book ‘Where Willy Went' (Allen, 2004) and discuss the front cover. Ask the students what they think it might be about.
  2. Read the book.
  3. Take time to explain pages and answer questions young people might have.

Questioning

  1. What did you like about the book? (Discuss the fact that every human is already a winner because we were all created from an ovum (egg) and a winning sperm).
  2. When you were younger, where did you think babies came from? (Allow time to discuss various myths).
  3. Do the maps of the reproductive systems show good information?
  4. What people or sources of information can an individual access if they have any further questions?
