Teaching Notes

In this learning sequence the students will make a list of people they can go to for help. It is often taken for granted that students will come to us for help but they can express fear about approaching ‘big
people’. Responsible adults and peers can be ‘officially identified’ by the students.

Procedure

  • Brainstorm with students trusted adults in the school community that are available to students if help if required. For example:
    – another class teacher
    – canteen manager
    – teacher’s aide
    – librarian
    – teacher in the playground
    – principal
    – older students in mentor/buddy roles.
  • Name the people and show where they are located at school so that students could talk to them if they need help or have a problem.
  • Brainstorm examples of scenarios that students may need help within the school environment e.g. injury, stolen sport equipment, students being mean.
  • Use the cards provided to brainstorm who are the people at school to help solve each problem. Students can write one or more person or place for each problem.
  • Tell the students that you are all going to use the map to visit the people in our school who can sort out if the students need help.
  • Take a walk through the school and confirm that the people they have identified would be able to help with each problem.

Note: Prior to conducting this activity, ensure that you communicate with school staff notifying them that your class will be walking around the school identifying trusted adults that are available for help.
Personally notify staff who the students may want to interview.

Questioning

  1. Who are some people at school that you could go to if you needed help and where are they located around the school?
  2. What could you do if you couldn’t find the person you were seeking at school?
  3. Who are some trusted adults at home or in the community you can ask for help?
