Teaching Notes

Use foundation activity ‘A Bag of Worries” and level 1-2 activity “Body Feelings as important pre-learning for this activity.

Students should be aware that people can have big or small problems and are likely to experience Early Warning Signs when they feel unsafe. They can always get help for problems or for feeling unsafe.

This activity emphasises that social rules don’t need to be followed when a person feels unsafe.

Procedure

  • Try to make sure you greet every child by name when they arrive in class each morning. It helps students feel welcomed and safe. You could use the roll call as an opportunity to greet each child by
    name each day.
  • Ask the students, in turn, to greet the person on their left, then their right, using their name.
  • Ask the students to role-play scenarios related to saying using some social rules. Some suggested scenarios have been provided at the end of the learning sequence. You may wish to develop your
own scenarios that could be more appropriate to your class.
  • Discuss each role-play after it has finished.
  • Social Rules letter can be explained to students and go home with them. This serves as a reminder to parents and carers about the type of conversation they are having at school.

Questioning

  1. What social rule could be used in this scenario? Hello, please, thank you, excuse me etc..
  2. Were there any scenarios when you don’t think you were required to use the social rules?
  3. Who or what resources could you access if you had any further questions or queries about this topic?
